Member Story: Leading with Clarity & Authenticity
December 2, 2020
- 2 min read
Jim is a Senior Vice President of Human Resources.
What motivated you to focus on Leading Others?
I care deeply about my team. I find that focusing on coaching my team and helping them become the best version of themselves aligns with my values and life purpose.
What steps did you take to improve?
First, I focused on awareness. I started to pay attention to my own behaviors as well as the behaviors of others I admired. Apart from performance reviews, I like to regularly ask for feedback from those I work with more often. This helped me identify my gaps.
I then started to get clarity on my values, and thought about how they show up in my day-to-day with my team. Being clear on my values helped me show up authentically.
Reading about and doing exercises focused on this topic has also been valuable. Learning about different ways of looking at leadership and reflecting on what is working and not working has opened my eyes to what's possible.
What was the outcome of your work?
I'm still a work in progress (aren't we all?) but I definitely have a greater sense of self-awareness. I'm able to really see how I show up and how I interact with others, and can even coach myself on how to move forward.
Any tips for others working on a similar topic?
There's no one-size-fits-all for leadership. Have clarity on your own values to help you define your unique style.
